Furnace Installation & Replacement in Hayward

Many Hayward homes built in the 1960s and 70s still run their original furnace or its first replacement. When it is time for a new one, sizing, venting and ducts matter as much as the furnace itself.

Furnace installation in Hayward is mostly replacement work: a furnace that has worn out in a 1950s ranch home in the flats, or the original unit in a 1960s–70s house whose ducts are just as old. New installations come up too, in additions and remodels. Either way, the job is a furnace sized for the house as it is today, installed to code under a permit, and started up and tested before we leave.

Signs your furnace is due for replacement

Age alone does not condemn a furnace, but when several of these line up, replacement is usually the better use of your money:

  • It is over 15 years old and needs a repair almost every season.
  • Frequent repairs: an igniter one winter, a control board the next, then the inducer motor.
  • Uneven heating: some rooms never warm up, even after the filter, vents and ducts have been checked.
  • Declining efficiency: gas bills creep up while your habits stay the same.
  • Obsolete technology: some controls on older furnaces are no longer made, and substitutes have to be adapted.
  • A safety finding: a cracked heat exchanger on an older furnace usually ends the repair discussion.

Not sure? Start with a diagnosis on our heating repair visit. We compare what the repair would cost with what replacement gets you, and if the repair is the sensible choice, we say so. If rebates matter to your decision, check what currently applies to the furnace you are considering before you choose.

Sizing: why the old furnace is not the guide

The furnace that comes out of the closet tells you little about the one that should go in. Since the 1960s a house may have gained attic insulation, double-pane windows, an addition or a converted garage. We size the new furnace from a load calculation for the house as it stands: floor area, insulation, windows, which way the rooms face and how tight the ducts are.

Where the house sits in Hayward matters too. Bay breezes keep winters mild in the flats, while homes in the Hayward Hills are cooler at night and more exposed to wind, and can need more heating capacity for the same floor area. Bigger is not a safe margin. An oversized furnace heats in short bursts, cycles on and off, wears its parts faster and leaves rooms uneven. An undersized one runs for hours on the coldest nights and still falls behind.

Choosing the furnace

  • Standard or high efficiency. A condensing (high-efficiency) furnace pulls extra heat out of its exhaust, vents through plastic pipe and needs a drain for the water it produces. In a hall closet with no easy route outside for new venting, a standard-efficiency furnace may be the practical choice.
  • Single-stage, two-stage or modulating. Staged furnaces run on low most of the time, which means quieter, steadier heat and smaller temperature swings.
  • Blower motor. A variable-speed blower moves air more quietly and suits homes that have, or will add, central air.
  • A heat pump instead? If both the furnace and an old AC are near the end, a heat pump can cover heating and cooling with one system. If you want central air added, a new furnace and AC installation can be planned together, since they share the blower and the ducts.

We install all major brands, such as Carrier, Lennox, Goodman and Daikin. We are independent, so the recommendation follows your house, not a brand.

What the installation includes

  1. Permit. We handle the permit, and the furnace is installed to code.
  2. Removal. The old furnace is disconnected and taken out.
  3. Gas and venting. The gas connection is made and leak-tested. Venting is checked and changed where the new furnace needs it; a metal flue that suited the old furnace may not suit the new one.
  4. Ducts. The connection to the duct system is sealed. In older homes we look at the ducts while we are there: attic runs can be crushed or disconnected, and in some older slab homes the ducts run in or under the slab, where leaks and moisture stay hidden. If they need ductwork repair, you hear it before the installation, not after.
  5. Thermostat. The thermostat is reconnected, or replaced if it cannot run the new furnace’s stages; see thermostat service.
  6. Start-up and testing. We check gas pressure, the temperature rise across the furnace, the draft and every safety control, then run full heating cycles with you watching.

After the installation

Register the warranty promptly; many manufacturers set a registration deadline, and missing it can shorten the coverage. Keep the installation papers, the permit and the model and serial numbers together where you can find them. Book the first maintenance visit within a year, before the second winter.

If your old furnace failed outright on a cold night, call us first: same-day service is available for urgent repairs, and a repair can often keep the heat on while the replacement is planned. For how long a furnace usually lasts and what shortens its life, see how long an HVAC system lasts.

Hayward homeowners ask

Can you install a new furnace the same day?

Same-day service is for urgent repairs. If your furnace has failed, we can come the same day to see whether a repair will carry you through; the installation is scheduled once you have chosen the new furnace.

How long does furnace installation take?

A like-for-like replacement in the same spot is often a one-day job. Moving the furnace, changing its type or rerouting venting or ducts takes longer.

Do you take care of the permit?

Yes. We handle the permit, remove the old furnace and install the new one to code.

Do I need new ducts with a new furnace?

Only if they need it. In many 1960s and 70s Hayward homes the ducts are as old as the furnace, so we check them before the installation and show you what we find.

What warranty comes with a new furnace?

The furnace carries the manufacturer's warranty. Register it promptly after installation, because many manufacturers set a deadline for full coverage.
