Goodman is a common choice when a Hayward home replaces its heating and cooling: plain, serviceable equipment without premium pricing, sold as split systems and as all-in-one package units. When a Goodman air conditioner quits on a hot afternoon, the cause is usually a capacitor, a contactor, a clogged drain or a refrigerant leak, and testing tells them apart before any part is replaced. Goodman is part of the Daikin group, and Amana equipment is built alongside it.
Goodman equipment we service
- Air conditioners. The GSX16, a single-stage model, and higher-efficiency units such as the GSXC18.
- Heat pumps. Models such as the GSZC18, which suit Hayward’s mild winters.
- Gas furnaces. Condensing furnaces such as the GMVC96, which vent through plastic pipe and drain off condensate.
- Split systems and package units. A split system keeps the furnace or air handler indoors; a package unit puts everything in one cabinet outside or on a roof.
Goodman AC not cooling: what it usually is
| What you see | Most likely | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor unit hums, fan does not spin | Failed run capacitor | Capacitor tested and replaced, fan motor checked |
| Thermostat calls, nothing runs outside | Pitted contactor, tripped breaker, pulled disconnect or a low-voltage fault | Electrical path traced from thermostat to compressor |
| Outdoor unit keeps running with the thermostat off | Contactor stuck closed | Contactor replaced |
| Runs all day, warm air, ice on the copper line | Low airflow or a refrigerant leak | Airflow checked first, then a leak search |
| Water around the indoor unit or furnace | Blocked condensate drain or a full pan | Drain cleared, float switch tested |
| Breaker trips when the AC starts | Shorted motor, compressor or wiring | Electrical diagnosis; stop resetting it |
If the breaker is the problem, our guide to an AC tripping the breaker explains what is safe to try and when to stop.
Capacitors and contactors: the first parts to go
The capacitor stores the electrical kick the compressor and fan need to start; years of hot afternoons weaken it, and the first heat wave is often the day it gives up. The contactor is the switch the thermostat closes to start the outdoor unit; each start burns its contacts slightly, and ants caught between them can stop it closing. Both are standard parts, so these are usually quick repairs.
Leaking indoor coils on older Goodman systems
A leaking evaporator coil is a common repair on Goodman systems from around the early 2010s. The signs build slowly: longer run times, a house that cools in the morning and falls behind by late afternoon, then ice on the larger copper line. The repair starts with finding the leak; adding refrigerant without finding it only buys time. A coil still under the parts warranty may be covered, while labor and refrigerant are not. On a system that old, a new coil is also the moment to compare the repair with a new system.
When it can’t wait: the 24/7 line
Call the emergency line, open 24/7, when the system stops in a heat wave, the furnace quits on a cold night, water is coming through a ceiling below an attic unit, or you smell burning from the equipment. While you wait:
- switch the system off at the thermostat if the outdoor unit hums without starting or you smell burning;
- reset a tripped breaker once; if it trips again, leave it off;
- if an attic unit is dripping, turn the system off and put a container under the leak;
- in a heat wave, close the blinds on the sunny side and keep one room as cool as you can with fans.
Same-day service is available for urgent repairs; see emergency HVAC for what counts as urgent.
The lifetime compressor warranty
Goodman has offered a lifetime compressor limited warranty on many units. Points worth knowing:
- It applies to qualifying models only, and usually to the original owner.
- It covers the compressor itself. Labor, refrigerant and other parts are normally not included.
- Goodman’s longer terms generally require online registration after installation, but its warranty certificates have exempted homes in California from that step. The certificate for your model and serial number is the final word.
- Most no-cooling calls are not the compressor. A dead capacitor or contactor makes a healthy compressor look dead, so it is tested before anyone talks about a claim.
Repair or replace?
A capacitor, contactor, fan motor, drain, igniter or flame sensor is a repair on almost any Goodman. Replacement is worth comparing when the compressor fails out of warranty, when a coil keeps leaking, when a furnace heat exchanger is cracked, or when the system is old enough to use R-22, a refrigerant no longer produced in the US, so every leak gets harder to justify fixing. Then compare the repair with AC installation or furnace installation.
Goodman in Hayward homes
Many Hayward ranch homes sit on slab foundations, so the furnace or air handler and the ducts are often in the attic. A blocked condensate line up there ends up on the ceiling below, so the secondary drain pan and its float switch deserve a look at every visit. Heat waves are when weak capacitors finally fail, and a spring maintenance visit catches most of them first. For Goodman package units on shops and offices, see commercial HVAC.
