Ruud HVAC Repair & Service in Hayward

Ruud is Rheem's contractor brand: built by the same manufacturer and sold through Ruud dealers. If the dealer that installed yours has closed, the system can still be serviced and its parts are easy to get.

Ruud air conditioners, heat pumps and gas furnaces sit in Hayward garages, hall closets, attics and side yards, many of them installed years ago by a Ruud dealer that may no longer be around. That is less of a problem than it sounds. Ruud is a Rheem brand built by the same manufacturer, so diagnosis, parts and warranty work as they do for Rheem. We are an independent shop with no tie to Ruud or Rheem.

A water heater name that grew into heating and cooling

Ruud carries the name of Edwin Ruud, who designed one of the first automatic gas water heaters, and the brand still sells water heaters today. Now part of Rheem, it is the contractor brand: equipment built alongside Rheem’s and sold through its own network of Ruud dealers. On the heating and cooling side that means central air conditioners, heat pumps and gas furnaces, in series such as Achiever Plus and Ultra. This page is about that equipment.

When a Ruud furnace will not heat

A gas furnace starts in a fixed order, and the step where it stops tells us what failed:

  1. The thermostat calls for heat.
  2. The inducer motor starts and pushes air through the heat exchanger and vent.
  3. The pressure switch confirms the draft. If it never closes, we look at the vent, the inducer and, on high-efficiency models, a blocked condensate drain.
  4. The hot surface igniter glows. Igniters are brittle and wear out, and a worn one is among the most common Ruud furnace repairs.
  5. The gas valve opens and the burners light.
  6. The flame sensor proves the flame. A coated sensor lets the burners light, then shuts them off seconds later.
  7. The blower starts and warm air reaches the rooms.

Most Ruud furnaces show a flash code on a status light. Count the flashes before you switch the furnace off, because cutting the power clears the code.

Compressor trouble: confirm before condemning

Compressor problems on Ruud air conditioners and heat pumps are the expensive kind, so they deserve the most careful diagnosis. A compressor that hums without starting may only need a capacitor or a start part. One that shuts off on overload may be overheating because of a dirty outdoor coil, a failed fan motor or a low charge. We test the start components, the motor windings and the operating pressures before calling a compressor failed. Defrost controls on Ruud heat pumps, a repair Ruud shares with Rheem, get the same test-first approach.

Yearly service: coils come first

Clean coils keep a Ruud system efficient and its compressor cool. The outdoor coil collects dust, leaves and grass clippings; the indoor coil catches whatever slips past the filter. A dirty coil makes the compressor work harder and run hotter, which is how skipped maintenance turns into compressor trouble. Our yearly visit cleans the outdoor coil, inspects the indoor coil and cleans it when needed, and checks the refrigerant side. On the furnace it includes a combustion analysis (our Rheem page explains what that measures) plus the igniter and flame sensor.

Parts and warranty without the original dealer

The manufacturer’s parts warranty belongs to the equipment, not the dealer. What counts is the install date and, depending on the terms, whether the unit was registered. Send photos of the data plates when you book. Parts come from the same supply as Rheem’s: igniters, capacitors and contactors are usually replaced on the first visit, while boards and motors are ordered by model and serial number. Our own repairs carry a warranty, with manufacturer-recommended parts.

Repair or replace

A worn igniter, a coated flame sensor, a capacitor or a fan motor is a repair on any Ruud that otherwise runs well. Replacement belongs in the conversation when a compressor failure is confirmed on an older unit out of warranty, or when an older system still runs on R-22, which is no longer produced, and has a leak. Many Hayward homes on slab foundations have their ducts in the attic, where summer heat works against the system, so a replacement is also the time to check them. Our guide on how long an HVAC system lasts helps put the age of your Ruud in context.

Hayward homeowners ask

Who makes Ruud equipment?

Rheem. Ruud began as a water heater company founded by Edwin Ruud and is now a Rheem brand, so its air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces come from the same manufacturer as Rheem's.

The company that installed my Ruud system closed. What happens to the warranty?

The manufacturer's parts warranty follows the equipment and its serial number, not the dealer. Keep the install date and any registration record. A labor warranty from the old dealer, if there was one, depended on that dealer.

Where do I find the model and serial number on my Ruud?

On the data plate on the side of the outdoor unit, and on a label inside the furnace door. Photos of both help us bring the right parts.

How often should a Ruud system be serviced?

Once a year: the furnace before winter, with a combustion analysis, and the air conditioner or heat pump before summer, with a coil cleaning.
