Maytag-badged HVAC equipment covers three lines: gas furnaces, central air conditioners and heat pumps. The name comes from the appliance brand, but the equipment is made by Nortek Global HVAC under license. For a Hayward homeowner that has two practical effects. Parts and warranty claims run through HVAC distribution, not through the appliance side, and the repair is a job for an HVAC technician, not an appliance repair service. Mechanically, Maytag systems are conventional equipment, and most repairs are the same wear items every split system has.
Which Maytag unit you have
- Gas furnaces. Such as the M1200 series, usually in the garage, the attic or an indoor closet.
- Central air conditioners. Standard single-speed models and the PSA4BI.
- Heat pumps. Units that heat and cool from one outdoor cabinet.
- iQ Drive. Maytag’s inverter line of air conditioners and heat pumps, where the compressor runs at variable speed.
The model and serial number are on the data plate on the side of the outdoor unit and on a label inside the furnace’s front panel. Take a photo of both before you call; it saves time on the diagnosis and on ordering parts.
The wear items behind most Maytag repairs
| Part | What it does | Sign it is failing |
|---|---|---|
| Contactor | Switches power to the outdoor unit when the thermostat calls | Outdoor unit will not start, or runs with the thermostat off |
| Run capacitor | Helps the compressor and fan motors start and run | Humming, a still fan, slow starts, a tripped breaker |
| Flame sensor | Proves the furnace burners are lit | Burners light, then shut off within seconds |
| Hot surface igniter | Lights the burners | Inducer runs, no flame, furnace locks out |
| Air filter | Protects the blower and coil | Weak airflow, a frozen coil, a furnace that overheats |
| Condensate drain | Carries water away from the coil and condensing furnaces | Water near the equipment, a float switch shutting it off |
These are standard parts and are widely available, so most of these repairs are completed without a long wait. The technician also checks why the part failed: a capacitor can be killed by a struggling motor, and a frozen coil by a blocked return.
iQ Drive units are the exception. Their compressor is run by an inverter drive, so a no-cooling call on one is diagnosed through its fault codes, sensors and drive board rather than the capacitor test that settles many calls on a standard unit, and the boards are specific to the model.
What Maytag maintenance covers
Dependable equipment still needs a yearly check, and it is what keeps the wear items above from failing on the worst day. A maintenance visit covers:
- Furnace, before winter: ignition, flame sensor, burners, heat exchanger inspection, venting, safety switches and the blower.
- Air conditioner or heat pump, before summer: coil cleaning, capacitor and contactor tests, refrigerant readings, drain flushing and airflow.
- Both: a filter change and a thermostat check.
If you are buying a home with Maytag equipment, an HVAC inspection tells you its condition before you own it.
Warranty and parts
- Coverage depends on the model, the installation date and registration; registering within the window after installation is what unlocks the longer terms on many units. The warranty certificate gives the details.
- Warranty covers the part; labor is usually separate.
- Claims go through HVAC distribution using the model and serial number. The appliance brand’s customer service is not the place for a furnace or air conditioner claim.
- We use manufacturer-recommended parts, and our repairs carry a warranty.
Repair or replace?
Contactors, capacitors, igniters, flame sensors and drains are small repairs worth doing at almost any age. Bigger failures change the math: a compressor out of warranty, a cracked heat exchanger, or an older system that keeps leaking refrigerant. Then compare the repair with furnace installation or AC installation before deciding.
Maytag in Hayward
Winter nights in Hayward drop into the 40s, so a furnace that works reliably matters even in a mild climate. Summers near the bay are manageable, but heat waves push air conditioners hard for days at a time. Book the furnace check before the first cold nights and the AC or heat pump check in late spring. Many 1960s and 70s homes here still have their original ducts; a new Maytag furnace connected to leaky old ductwork loses part of its benefit, so ask about ductwork repair whenever the furnace is replaced. For a no-heat call now, see heating repair.
